Expat Checklist: Plan Your Move Step by Step

Use this checklist as your relocation roadmap. Work through the sections in order: each task is something concrete you can finish, and together they take you from first research to feeling at home in your new country.

1. Research and decide

Shortlist 2-3 destination cities

Compare cost of living, job market, language, climate and distance from home. Our city guides cover these point by point.

Check visa options for your nationality

Identify which visa types you qualify for (work, digital nomad, retirement, family) and their income or sponsorship requirements.

Build a realistic budget

Plan for 3 months of living costs up front: deposits, temporary housing, flights, insurance and visa fees.

2. Visas and paperwork

Gather your core documents
Passport valid 6+ months beyond arrival
Birth and marriage certificates (apostilled if required)
Diplomas and employment records
Criminal record certificate where required
Apply for your visa or residence permit

Start early: processing commonly takes 4-12 weeks depending on the country and visa type.

Get international health insurance

Many visas require proof of coverage from day one; local public coverage often starts only after registration.

3. Before departure

Give notice: housing, utilities, subscriptions
Landlord or property manager
Electricity, internet, phone plans
Gym, insurance and other contracts
Sort your finances

Tell your bank you are moving, check international card fees, and set up a low-fee transfer service for moving money.

Book temporary accommodation for arrival

Reserve 2-4 weeks near the city center so you can visit long-term rentals in person.

Arrange shipping or sell what you own

Get quotes from at least two international movers, or travel light and refurnish on arrival.

4. First weeks after arrival

Register with local authorities

Most countries require address registration or an ID/tax number within the first days or weeks.

Open a local bank account

Usually needs your passport, visa/permit and proof of address; some banks accept your temporary accommodation.

Get a local SIM and register for healthcare
Find your long-term home

Visit in person, understand the local deposit rules, and never wire money before seeing a contract.
